Round the Black Isle

Saturday, 2 March 2013

We then drove to Rosehaugh estate where we took a short walk and saw a few woodland birds including great spotted woodpecker and treecreeper. On the sea at Rosemarkie were common scoter, long tailed duck and eider. From there we went to Newhall Point where we added Slavonian grebe and guillemot to the list. The tide was now quite far in so we went to the new hide at Udale for lunch and watched spectacular flying displays of flocks of bar-tailed godwit, dunlin and knot. Wigeon were feeding on the saltmarsh and everyone had a good view of the vagrant American wigeon which has been at Udale this winter. After lunch we drove along to Cromarty stopping to look at the raft of scaup on the firth. Some members then went to look for dipper at Fairy Glen. A total of 56 species were recorded.
