September and October News

September and October News

On friday 3 September our first indoor meeting of the season features a talk by Martin Johnson on the landscapes, birds and mammals of Namibia, entitled "Under African Skies". If you want to know how to deal with a charging bull elephant, this is the talk for you! On 19 September our first coach trip takes us to Pagham Harbour on the south coast where we will expect to see an excellent variety of birds, including migrants preparing to leave for warmer climes.

We are lucky and privileged to host Gordon Langsbury on 1 October. Gordon is a first class speaker and excellent photographer, who will be talking about the birdlife of the island of Islay. On 17 October we will again be heading to the south coast by coach, this time to visit RSPB Dungeness in Kent (where purple herons bred this year!) and explore the area near the observatory, where rare drift and passage migrants may be present.

From early October our 2011 calendar will be available. This is a new venture for us: the calendar, featuring high quality images of UK birds by Local Group members, will be on sale at our indoor and outdoor meetings, priced at £7.50. We hope that you may be interested in purchasing one or more copies: for further information contact Martin Johnson (
