January and February News for 2014

On Friday 10 January local speaker Barrie Mason visits "The Settlement" to show us images of Scotland's wildlife and landscapes in a talk entitled "The Splendour of Scotland". Our first field trip of the New Year, on Sunday 19 January, is a coach trip to Lynford Arboretum and RSPB Lakenheath Fen (NOTE CHANGE OF VENUES, DUE TO FLOODING AT RSPB FEN DRAYTON AND RSPB OUSE WASHES RESERVES). We should see a good variety of common and not so common (marsh tit, common crossbill) woodland birds at Lynford, with the possibility of Hawfinch and the outside chance of two-barred crossbill. Lakenheath hosts some quality reed-bed birds, including bittern and common crane, in the winter and there is currently a very active (hen and marsh) harrier roost there at dusk.
We hope that all Local Group members (and readers of this article) will be participating in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch on the weekend of 25-26 January!

Bird Blogger and retired school teacher Jonathon Forgham will be taking us on a bird-watching tour of the North Norfolk coastal path when he speaks at "The Settlement" on Friday 7 February. His talk is entitled "The Birds of the North Norfolk Coast" and is very relevant to us, as we regularly visit this part of the world on our field trips! On Sunday 16 February we head up the A1 to make our first visit to the RSPB Old Moor nature reserve, near Barnsley. The reserve boasts an excellent visitor centre, seven hides and a good variety of our feathered friends, all located in "God's Own Country"! For further information about this and all our events, see the "Events" page.
