May and June News 2016

May and June News 2016

May started with our AGM on Friday 6th, which was accompanied by a talk by our leader, featuring video clips and slides, on the subject of 'Feeding the Birds'. The talk attempted to delve more deeply into why we feed birds and how feeding the birds benefits us, as well as the birds. With this season's indoor meetings programme complete we nevertheless had a full programme of field trips to come, which included coach trips to The Peak District (May) and NWT Hickling Broad (June) and own transport visits to Paxton Pits (morning), Panshanger Park, Biggleswade Common and RSPB Fowlmere (evenings) and Lakenheath Fen, Weeting Heath and Thetford Forest (half day). Highlights are too numerous to mention but included nightingale at Paxton Pits, pied flycatchers at RSPB Coombes Valley (Peak District), grasshopper warbler at Panshanger, turtle dove at Fowlmere, bittern (see photograph) and crane at Lakenheath and nightjar (seen by all) at Thetford Forest. For more information about the coach trips see the trip reports and for information about next season's trips (starting in late August) go to the 'events' page.

Not all of our work is about running indoor meetings and field trips - far from it! In June we ran stalls at both the Shefford Show and the Letchworth Festival, raising over £100 for the RSPB and providing publicity about the Local Group's activities for the general public. This work is very important for the Local Group - this season we raised over £1000 for the RSPB through our fundraising activities.

Note that in future this news page will be used both to look back at past events as well as to publicise future activities. The next news update is likely to be in late August or early September.
