August and September News 2018

Our 2018-19 season got under way with a visit to Rutland Water on August Bank Holiday Sunday. The weather let us down somewhat but spirits were, as usual, high and we were rewarded with sightings of 65 bird species including osprey, peregrine, great white egret and a good variety of waders. Stuart Elsom provided an entertaining talk at our first indoor meeting, on 7 September. Entitled "Colorado: the Chicken Run", Stuart regaled us about his adventures trying to see all the species of USA grouse in Colorado and surrounding states. On the 16th we were on the road for our first coach trip of the season, visiting the birdwatchers' paradise that is Cley NWT reserve. The weather was warm and dry and by the end of the day we had seen 76 bird species [see attached PDF file for the full list], as well as otter, grey seal and an excellent variety of butterfly and dragonfly species. We are a fund raising local group, with the committee and members helping to raise over 1500 pounds for the RSPB last season. On the 22nd we ran a stall at the Hitchin Community Fair (a new venture for us). Despite rapidly deteriorating weather we managed to raise some money through the sale of fluffy toys and were able to interact with the public in order to publicise our activities - many thanks to all who helped on the day.
