News for February and March 2018

Andy Clements, the CEO for the British Trust for Ornithology, gave an excellent presentation in February on the research that his organisation carries out to quantify and understand changes in wild bird populations. His description of the use of satellite tags to follow the migration of 'our' cuckoos to and from Africa was particularly enlightening. Our February coach trip to RSPB Pulborough Brooks (West Sussex) gave us all the opportunity to see a rare wintering Temminck's stint on the reserve, together with a great selection of wintering wildfowl and woodland birds including, for a lucky few, a lesser spotted woodpecker. Unfortunately snow on the afternoon of our March indoor meeting forced its cancellation. We will endeavour to accommodate the unfortunate speaker, Clare Stringer from the RSPB, at the earliest future opportunity. Snow and ice also made our coach trip to Fingringoe Wick (a beautiful Essex Wildlife Trust reserve) difficult, but despite the wintry conditions our visit produced an impressive 74 bird species, including greenshank, red-breasted merganser and firecrest. Not surprisingly the adders that we had hoped to see here were hiding away beneath the snow!
