October to December News 2019

In October Lizzie Bruce, the warden at RSPB Titchwell Marsh NNR, came to talk to us about the reserve, its birds and the exciting future plans for what is, for many of us, our favourite reserve. Our coach trip was to Holkham and Wells where, as expected, we saw a plethora of resident, migrating and passage birds including great white egret, whinchat and short-eared owl (84 bird species recorded on the day). In November Dr Jen Smart visited 'The Settlement' to talk about the work going on in the area of the Nene Washes to save our grassland waders, with particular reference to the small (but hopefully increasing!) numbers of black-tailed godwits that nest there. Our coach trip took us to the beautiful Blashford Lakes reserve on the edge of the New Forest, where we once again enjoyed good weather and saw 76 bird species on the day, including a lesser scaup (a 'first' for the Local Group), common scaup, Caspian gull and brambling amongst others. In December we welcomed the author and journalist Patrick Barkham to 'The Settlement'. Patrick spoke about the wildlife seen on many of the UK Islands that feature in his recent book, 'Islander', as well as giving us a fascinating account about how the book came into being. There was an excellent turnout for our final, 'own transport' field trip of the year. We returned to Ferry Meadows Country Park (Peterborough) for the first time in over 15 years, enjoying the walk round the lakes in sunny weather, before visiting the dark, mysterious and rather beautiful Woodwalton Fen reserve, where we were lucky to see a hen harrier, as well as the resident Chinese water deer (50 bird species seen on the day)!
