Group Leader's News January 2021

Speaker Stuart Elsom provided excellent entertainment at our most recent Zoom meeting on the evening of Friday 8 January. Not only did his talk, 'Japan in Winter', feature the wonderful wildlife of this unique country, ranging from its frozen north to the islands of the sub-tropical south, but some of its more unusual customs were highlighted as well. We had 35 'joiners' for the evening, but since many of these were couples I reckon that Stuart's audience probably numbered around 45 - pretty good, considering the circumstances! Our next speaker is the acclaimed naturalist and writer Dominic Couzens. Dominic has visited 'The Settlement' in the (distant) past, to give a talk which included recordings of variations in regional bird song - I wonder how many of our members can remember?! This time he doesn't need to leave the comfort of his own home, but his talk (see our 'Events' page) should be well worth listening to.

Unfortunately the current lockdown means that there will be no field trips or outdoor meetings until we are all able to gather in groups of six or more again. For keen birdwatchers such as myself this is really frustrating, but a small sacrifice to pay for ensuring safety. I do, however, intend to organise one or two Zoom 'coffee mornings' (local group members only) in the next few months, so that we can socialise, albeit at a distance! Please keep safe, everybody - hopefully it won't be too long before we can meet face to face again.
