Group Leader's News January 2022

Thankfully, there have been no lockdowns so far this winter, although the 'omicron' Covid-19 variant has been a little disruptive. Our January speaker, Samantha Franks, chose to give her excellent, wide-ranging talk on Alaska online on Zoom - her beautiful images and short video clips gave us a real feel for the state and made me, for one, quite keen to visit - but only in summer! Our next speaker, John Mallord, will also be delivering his talk about vultures (on Friday 4 February) online - we hope to return to 'The Settlement' for this season's remaining talks, details of which will shortly appear on our 'Events' page.

We enjoyed an excellent 'own transport' visit to Lackford Lakes and Lynford Arboretum on the 16th. Helped by good weather, we saw 68 species of bird, with multiple sightings of up to eight hawfinches at Lynford. Our February trip to Paxton Pits and Grafham Water will also be 'own transport', after which we hope to get back to running coach trips - provided we can get enough people interested!
