The coach left a damp Springwood at 8 am arriving at Rutland at 10.45 where the weather was good, but breezy. Here the group slit up with most people going to visit some of the many hides, but a smaller group including our group leader set off for the 1 mile walk to Barnsdale for Slavonian & Black Necked Grebe. Most people started at the viewing shelter near the visitor centre, seen here were mainly tits including Marsh and Long Tailed. From the Visitor Centre Mute Swans and some other wildfowl including Teal, also seen were a few waders mostly Lawing and Dunlin. On the walk to Lagoon 2 Robins and Redwing were seen and from the hides around the lagoon (where there was no ice) lots of wildfowl was seen including Golden Eye, Tufted Duck and a red head Smew. From the Shoveler Hide Green Sandpiper, Little Egret and Buzzard were seen. At Lagoon 4 was more wildfowl including Canada Geese, lots of Gulls mostly Black headed, with a few lesser Black Backs. Also seen here by some was peregrine. After Lunch most people went to other hides where Great White Egret and Egyptian Geese were seen. A last minute visit to the Visitor Centre added Kestrel to the list making the group species total 51. We left for home just as it was getting dark and arriving back at Springwood at 6.40 pm after an enjoyable days birding.
