Left Huddersfield at 8.30am arrived at Whisby an hour and 45 minutes later to a fine, but cold day. 1st stop the feeders near the visitor centre here there were Chaffinches, Blue and Great tits and Tree Sparrows. At the back of the visitor centre on Thorpe Lake were Black headed and Mediterranean Gulls, Coots and Tufted Duck. After this on to Coot Lake walk, not much on the lake, just a few Canada Geese, but no Nightingales. However Blackcap, Willow and Garden Warbler and Chiffchaff were seen and heard. On Grebe Lake were more Black headed Gulls, Tufted ducks, Mallard, some Grey lagged Geese, Little Egret, Grey Heron and Great Crested Grebe were seen. Over the railway, on the new bridge, Kestrels were seen at the nest box. Unfortunately the Female was dead. On Willow Lake there was Gadwall and Little Grebe. On Teal lake Cormorants and Mallard were seen and Reed Warblers were heard in the reeds near the viewing screen. At 4.00 pm the sun came out and some of the group decided to try the Coot Lake walk again and it was successful as 3 Singing Nightingales and more Warblers were seen and heard! We left for home at 5.00pm arriving back in Huddersfield at 6.45 pm.
