Monday, 27 March 2017

The group left Springwood at 8.30 am in the big bus it was a rainy start in Huddersfield but fine when we reached Hartlepool. Our first stop was to Spion Kopp Cemetery Hartlepool where a Shore lark was seen along with a Kestrel and a Ringed Plover. Then onto Hartlepool Headland, where the highlight was an Icelandic gull sleeping on a roof also seen were Kittiwakes, Cormorants, Oystercatchers, Eider Ducks and common scoters on the sea. A young Grey Seal was also seen on the rocks. Unusually very few waders were seen only Redshank and Turnstone, but a local birdwatcher said there had been good numbers of them earlier in the day. On to RSPB Saltholme where Red Breasted merganser was seen and there were good views of a Long eared owl. Next Stop was Greetham Creek were Avocet and Common Seal were seen and a lucky few saw a Short Eared Owl.
