RSPB Outing to Pennington Flash & Burton Mere Wetlands on 24/06/2018

We set off from Springwood car park, Huddersfield at 8.30am arriving at North Cave an hour later. It was a beautiful day and Very warm and a good number of birds were to be seen. A Mediterranean gull with its chicks could be spotted among the Black Headed gulls. Also Common Tern and Green Woodpecker. A good number of Warblers were both seen and heard including Sedge, Reed, Garden, Cettis, White throat, Lesser White throat, Chiffchaff and Blackcap. Ducks included Shelduck Pochard, Shoveler, Gadwall, Golden eye and Tufted Duck. Waders spotted were Avocet, Little Ringed Plover, Oystercatcher, Black-tailed Godwit and Snipe. Leaving North Cave at 12.45 we set off for Bempton Cliffs. Were we enjoyed seeing large numbers of Gannets, Guillemots, and Kittiwakes alongside Puffins, Fulmars and Razorbills. Insects seen throughout the included Good numbers of dragonfly enjoying the sunshine Four-spotted chaser, Broad Bodied-Chaser, Black tailed Skimmer and Brown Hawker were all to be seen Also seen were Blue and Red Damselfly's.. There was also a good collection of butterflies spotted including Small Skipper, Brown Argos, Ringlet, Speckled Wood and Meadow Brown. A lucky few also spotted Stoats. We set off home at 5pm after seeing over 80 species of bird. 36 people attended the trip at a cost of £13 each.
