Field Meeting

Location: Meet at Manningtree Maltings. Map ref TM109319.

Manningtree and Mistley for waders and wildfowl on River Stour.
The first trip of the year has traditionally been to Manningtree and Mistley on the River Stour to view the waders and wildfowl that gather here in large numbers in the winter and this year will be no different. Walking is on hard footpaths, the area is sheltered and if really wet we can birdwatch from the cars. We meet opposite Manningtree Maltings and then proceed towards Mistley, viewing the large numbers of waders and duck that can be seen from the road. These include Wigeon, Teal, Pintail, Dunlin, Knot, Redshank, Grey Plover, Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit and Avocet amongst others. Goldeneye and sawbills have been regularly noted around the Mistley quay area, although access may be restricted here due to building work. Wrap up well if it is cold but come along and enjoy the local spectacle of thousands of winter waders and wildfowl in the area. 2-3 hours, 2-3 miles. Leader Stephen Marginson. All welcome.

Levington Creek and River Orwell for waders, geese and wildfowl.
This is one of the main roosting and feeding areas for waders and wildfowl on the River Orwell in winter. Surrounding reedbed, marsh and scrubland also provides an excellent habitat for many different species of bird. We meet at the car park and then will proceed along the creek viewing the waders and wildfowl along the way. These include Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Lapwing, Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, Knot and Dunlin. The area has also been home in recent winters to Green Sandpiper and Greenshank. Duck include Wigeon, Shelduck, Pintail and Teal. Out on the Orwell, grebes, divers and sawbills can be found. The surrounding marsh and reedbed supports a variety of birds of prey along with Bearded Tit, Reed Bunting and Kingfisher. Flocks of finches and thrushes are common on the surrounding farm and scrubland. Walking can be muddy if it has been wet and the area is exposed to south and westerly winds so wrap up well for a great morning's birdwatching. 2-3 hours, 2-3 miles. Leader Stephen Marginson. All welcome.
