John W. Bateman

John W. Bateman, former Leader of the RSPB Lancaster Local Group, sadly passed away earlier this week. John was a member of the local group committee for many years and also Group Leader until ill health forced him to step down as Leader a couple of years ago. He was a keen birdwatcher and led many of the Local Group walks and outings. John was also a member of the Lancaster and District Birdwatching Society.

I first met John in the late 1970s on a WEA birdwatching course run by John Wilson. I soon started enjoying local birdwatching trips with John Bateman, the late Tom Marshall and a young David Bateson. John was always keen to learn and help others who were learning to identify waders, warblers and other little brown jobs. I have many happy memories of birdwatching visits to local birdwatching sites such as Leighton Moss, Hest Bank, Conder Green, Pilling, plus further afield on RSPB Lancaster Local Group trips. We also enjoyed birdwatching holidays to Wales and Norfolk. John will be sadly missed by the local group and local birdwatchers.

John's funeral is on Wednesday 15 May 11.45am, at the Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium. We understand that flowers are requested only from John's family and that donations to the RSPB can be made via Preston, Ireland, and Bowker, Funeral Directors, Queen Street, Lancaster.

Our thoughts are with John's family at this sad time.
