In sharp contrast to last year when a destructive storm surge necessitated the cancellation of our annual pre Christmas walk, eleven of us enjoyed more benign weather when we met at 9.30am on the shore at Hest Bank then later moving on to the eastern end of the Morecambe Promenade.

By training our binoculars and telescopes seaward and occasionally landward, we achieved a good tally of the various birds that inhabit our coast at this time of the year: shelduck, pintail, wigeon, eider, shoveler, lesser black-backed gull, great crested grebe, red-backed merganser, black-tailed godwit, bar-tailed godwit, redshank, lapwing, oystercatcher, curlew, dunlin, carrion crow, jackdaw, pied wagtail, mistle thrush, cormorant and kingfisher.

Afterwards we enjoyed hospitality at the home of Bill and Chris Ashby (who had led our walk), where mince pies and mulled wine were served.
