Several Local Group members met up at the eastern end of Morecambe Promenade for our annual Christmas seaside birdwatch and "get together". As in previous years, our hosts for the day were Bill and Chris Ashby.

Despite virtually windless conditions and a high tide nudging just nine metres of height, through our collective efforts of keen observation, we were able to record the following bird species, the majority of these being out on the Bay with a few others seen flying over the land that was behind us:

black-tailed godwit, bar-tailed godwit, lapwing, knot, dunlin, turnstone, redshank, grey heron, oystercatcher, snipe, pintail, eider, shelduck, wigeon, robin, wren, carrion crow, peregrine, black-headed gull, great-crested grebe, great black-backed gull, curlew, teal, cormorant, greylag goose, little egret and herring gull.

After our outdoor session was over, we followed on to the Ashby's home in Heysham to enjoy seasonal light refreshments of mulled wine and mince pies. Once more, many thanks to Bill and Chris for their kind hospitality.
