Male merlin perched on mossy hummock, Shetland Isles

Birds Round Up - November

Wintering duck numbers, particularly Teal and Wigeon, were low due to the mild weather. The short period of night frosts and northerly winds brought the sound of Redwings tseeping overhead and the appearance of the first Goldeneye. Scandinavian thrushes showed in small flocks of Redwing and the odd party of 40 Fieldfare were seen passing overhead. Lapwing and Golden Plover numbers were good in the Tame valley and small parties of Dunlin and Ruff were seen. Redshank and Snipe could be found at Croxall (SK1813). Whitemoor Haye turned up a pair of light bellied Brent Geese, a rarity in east Staffs, Corn Buntings and Skylarks were also showing well near the microlight club and a passing Merlin was also seen. Highlights at Blithfield were a Leach's Petrel for an afternoon and an immature Red-breasted Merganser.
