Birds Round Up - May

Recent weeks have brought the arrival of welcome summer visitors:
Seven Springs on Cannock Chase (SK 0019) has Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher and Redstarts with Tree Pipits on the more open areas. There was a large movement of Arctic Terns through the area on May 1st with 60 at Blithfield (SK0523) and the odd Garganey and Common Scoter have also been found there. House Martins have arrived late locally coinciding with the arrival of Swifts early this week and the warm conditions have seen them performing their screaming flights over Lichfield. Branston Water Park (SK2221) has many Sedge and Reed Warblers with a few visible Lesser Whitethroats in the hedge running alongside the canal. Their are Little Ringed Plovers at Croxall reserve (SK1914) and Whitemoor Haye (SK1813) with Yellow Wagtails at the latter location.

Lichfield Group Helps RSPB Build Bridges

Proceeds from Lichfield and District RSPB group meetings have been donated to help fund the construction of a new bridge over the Coombes Brook at Coombes Valley RSPB reserve in North Staffordshire (Grid reference: SK005525).

Group Leader Ray Jennett said: 'We are delighted that we are able to support one of our local RSPB reserves. Coombes Valley is a great place to visit at this time of the year, with returning Pied Flycatchers and Redstarts breeding."
