Swallows flitted over head in the car park and a grey heron gave us a fly pass. Crossing the road we were delighted to see the first sedge warbler of the year sat on top of the brambles. Along the boardwalk a chiffchaff was singing and meadow pipits, red-legged partridge and brent geese put in an appearance. It was great that the hides had recovered from the effects of the tidal surge, you would never know anything had happened. From Avocet hide we watched the spectacle of a food pass between a pair of marsh harriers. Three greenshanks, a ruff and two bearded tits were seen with a water pipit spotted by Richard being a big plus. From Dawkes and Teal hides wigeon, teal, gadwall, shelduck, shoveller, redshank and dunlin were seen and there was much discussion about the little ring plovers - were they or were they not "little" ring plovers. Photographs confirmed they were. The flock of black-tailed godwits we had seen from the visitor centre had flown which was a shame as they were in full summer plumage. On the way back along the boardwalk a flock of brent geese had settled in the field to feed and preen. The morning was rounded off with lunch at the visitor centre after which some of us drove to the beach where we saw wheatears and a hare on the field. A short spell of sea watching netted us common and sandwich terns and a small skein of common scoter. As the wind had gotten up and scopes were unstable we headed off home having had a most enjoyable day.
