Redshank perched on post

Tuesday, 3 May 2016

We met at the reserve car park for a 10am start, six members and myself, where we watched Swallows, Blackcaps, Whitethroat, House Sparrow and a Reed Bunting. From here we took the main track towards the scrape, on route we heard Cuckoo, Sedge Warblers and saw Jackdaws, Reed Bunting and Peacock Butterfly. We stopped at the high point overlooking the scrape where we set up a telescope and had good views of Little Egret, Mute Swan various Geese and Mallard with young. We continued along the track to the river wall adding Skylark and Chinese Water Deer to the list, at the wall gate we turned left, and saw a fresh male Orange-Tip and more Peacock Butterflies. We took our time along the river path in the hope of seeing an early Wall Brown butterfly, unfortunately none were seen just more Peacocks that were very active mating. Our route followed the path along the west side of the scrape with good views of a pair of Marsh Harriers and singing Sedge Warblers before arriving at the scrape where again we set up the scope and were rewarded with Wheatear, Little-ringed Plover, Pied and Yellow Wagtail, Redshank and Dunlin. We returned to the car park via the track past Sprats Water with more butterflies, Warblers, Chaffinch and a Peregrine Falcon. This was a very enjoyable three hour walk, nice weather and good company, thanks to all who attended.
