Dunwich Greyfriars Wood and Mount Pleasant Circular. Thursday 22nd September

The morning was bright with mist over distant Southwold, but not cold in fact by September standards quite warm. By the end of the walk we were bathed in sunshine with a clear blue sky, real shirt sleeve weather.
We started our walk taking the foot path through Greyfriars wood, the first section was not very rewarding, but as we moved through the wood we started to see and hear a few birds, Treecreeper, Wren, Robin and a few tits. We crossed the Dunwich to Coast guard cottages road into a different habitat of low bushes and open land, stopping to scan the distant trees and bushes. At one point we had a discussion about a small brown job at least a few hundred yards away from us, we came to the conclusion that it was likely to be a Blackcap! But it could have been anything. As we move further on we started to see butterflies in good numbers making good use of the flowering ivy, this is one of the most beneficial plants for wildlife in our countryside, offering nesting habitat in spring, nectar in late summer/autumn and berries in winter.
We saw many more butterflies before the end of the walk. Our bird tally was increasing as well with good views of Buzzard, Sparrow hawk, and Marsh Harrier along with smaller passerines and hirondines , the Swallows and Martins all moving south, they will not be with us for much longer. It had taken about three hours to complete the circular route with twenty four species of birds seen, seven species of butterflies and two mammals. This was one of those mornings when it was a pleasure to be out with good company all of the same mind set, but ready for a cup of tea at the beach café. Thanks to all who attended.
