23 March- report from Styal Country Park
A walk in the Southern and Northern Woods showed a minimum of 30 singing male chiffchaff. (First chiffchaff seen on Monday 20 March)
The dippers are nest building in usual culvert and kingfishers are present at the previous year's nesting site. Great spotted woodpecker numbers are difficult to count as birds are showing large movement but at least four males are present - this is a low estimate - Southern/Northern Woods areas + Bank House Farm figure is almost certainly double this but will be updated during the next survey.
There are still five buzzards in the area, often in sky together and a raven pair are nest building .
Snipe numbers are again difficult to estimate - I have seen approx 30 together but local dog walkers estimate they are flushing 50+ from fields in Twinnies Bridge area.
