May 2021 Wildlife Sightings

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the latest 'minimise travel' instructions in England we have amended the normal wildlife sightings section of our website. We will continue to welcome reports of wildlife seen locally. Initially only the species will be published, possibly with limited location information.

31 May - Swift flying high over SK10 3DP (Daryll Bailey)

30 May - Two female Mandarin Ducks one with five chicks the other with eight chicks on Macclesfield Canal near entrance footpath to Danes Moss (David Tolliday)

30 May (am and pm) - Swifts (4 ) Blakelow Road, Macclesfield. Attracted by sound recordings to hopefully entice the swifts into the new nestboxes. (David Beer)

30 May - Golden Plover with a chick and Curlew (4) on Axe Edge (David Tolliday)

29 May - Swifts (11) some flying very low and screaming along Brookfield Lane, Macclesfield (David Tolliday)

29 May - Red Kite, location withheld (David Tolliday)

28 May - Swift (many) flying low around Alma Mill, Macclesfield (Martin James)

27 May - Swift (3) one rescued from being trapped in a roof space, Westbrook Drive, Macclesfield (Darren Mayer)

27 May - Swifts flying around St Michael's Church, possibly listening to the attraction calls played from the church tower (Swifts Over Macclesfield)

27 May - Swift (3) over Grassmere Avenue, Macclesfield (Sonia Harrison)

27 May - Osprey seen taking a fish at Lamaload Reservoir (Frankie & Phil Badcock)

27 May - Something I've never heard before on Tytherington Golf Course today. A chiffchaff song that changed part way through to a Willow Warbler song, at first I though it was a coincidence with two birds close together singing but it happened four times with no delay between the changes so very unlikely to be two different birds. Has anybody else ever heard the same thing happening? (David Tolliday)

19 May - Gadwall (lots), Pochard (lots with chicks), Reed Warbler, Black-necked Grebe (lots with chicks at Woolston Eyes (David Collis)

15 May - Little Owl in Sutton garden (David Collis)

11 May - Garden Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Willow Warbler at Neumann's Flash (David Collis)

11 May - Greylag geese (14 including 5 goslings), grey wagtail, great crested grebes (1 pair diving not dancing), a mixed flock of approx 50 hirundines (mostly house martins with a few swallows and swifts), mallard ducklings, young coots and moorhen, male reed bunting, greater spotted woodpecker at Poynton Pool (Richard and Viv Arnold)

11 May - Garden Warbler (3), Swift, Swallow, House Martin, Sand Martin, Goosander, Mandarin Duck, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Kingfisher, Stock Dove along River Bollin, Presbury to Mottram Hall. (Paul Davies)
