Outdoor Meeting: Cromford and Carsington Water - - Sunday 20 March 2016
Jackdaw - Gordon Howard

Wednesday, 20 April 2016

Eleven of us met up at Cromford Wharf car park on a sunny, still, clear morning hoping to see Hawfinch, our target bird. Sightings of this elusive bird have been few and far between this year and this morning proved to be no exception. However, we had good views of Grey Wagtail, Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit, Nuthatch and Treecreeper, either in the churchyard or from the bridge over the River Derwent, before moving on to Carsington Water, where, apart from birds, we were treated to a day of even more most welcome sunshine.

We had several excellent sightings of at least two of the three Great Northern Divers reported to be on the water as well as a good mixture of birds at the two Sheepwash bird hides and the feeding table in the Sheepwash car park before finishing up at the Wildlife Centre hide near the Visitor Centre. An interesting sighting here was a leucistic Snipe that was unusually easy to spot amongst a group of almost invisible colleagues.

A total of 53 species were seen on the day (see list below)
