July Bird of the Month - Spotted Flycatcher

This declining summer visitor arrives in Britain in late May and departs for its wintering grounds south of the equator by the end of September.The spotted flycatcher is a slim sparrow-sized bird that has an upright posture and alert appearance, which is very attractive. Sexes are similar with grey-brown upper parts with pale fringes to the wing feathers. The under parts are off-white with fine streaking on the breast and also on the crown, the latter giving the species its scientific name. The woodcock is a wader with a distinctive dumpy body, long thick-based bill and short legs. Its cryptic colours and patterns on the plumage make it almost impossible to detect amongst the leaf litter where it nests and feeds.
