December Bird of the Month - Lesser Redpoll

December Bird of the Month - Lesser Redpoll

The adult male Lesser Redpoll has heavily streaked grey-brown upper-parts and paler streaking on the underparts. The bill is yellow and conical. The red crown, white wingbar and pinkish flush to the breast all stand out.

Females are similar but they lack the pink breast flush. Their flight call is a rattling chek-chek-chek.

You may be lucky to see this species on our field trip to Bedgebury Pinetum on Sunday 4th December. Stodmarsh and Hothfield are also good places spot them in the winter months.
