May Bird of the Month - Cuckoo

May Bird of the Month - Cuckoo

The cuckoo is a summer visitor and is the only British bird which practises brood parasitism, with reed warblers, dunnocks and meadow pipits being the favoured hosts.

Sexes are similar, being grey above with barring below, yellow legs and eyes. They can resemble hawks in flight but unlike hawks their wings never rise above the horizontal.

Juvenile cuckoos are brown and some of the females are of the rare hepatic morph which presents as a rufous shade.

Males arrive in April/May and females follow shortly after and respond to the "cuckoo" call with a bubbling one. Neither sex takes any further part in the raising of their young and once fledged the juveniles feed up on cinnabar moth and other hairy caterpillars and then by some miracle find their own way to Africa to spend the winter.

Join us on the coach trip to Minsmere or either of our two field trips this month to maximise your chances of connecting with this iconic bird.
