September Bird of the Month - Greenshank

September Bird of the Month - Greenshank

Outside the breeding season it inhabits estuaries and coastal marshes, as well as lake margins, rivers and reservoirs. It feeds by probing into wet mud for ragworms and shrimps or by sweeping its bill from side to side and dancing through the water with a high stepping action to disturb small fish on which to feed.

It is usually seen singly but also travels in small flocks when migrating. Most northern European birds migrate from July - September en route to their winter quarters in central and southern Africa, but some overwinter in Britain.

Join our walk at Medway Local Council's Riverside Country Park this month for a chance to connect with this lovely wader.
