Minsmere (Coach Trip)

Minsmere (Coach Trip)
Happy group members at Minsmere

Saturday, 20 May 2017

This was our first and only coach trip of the 2017 season, but if we only have one trip it has to be Minsmere in either spring, as this year or autumn, as last year. Why? Because it is a fabulous RSPB reserve. Why else would the BBC almost permanently base Springwatch there?

This was Wendy, our new/y elected leader's second outside trip.

It is not always possible to break even on the coaches and this trip was no exception in that the group had to subsidise it to the tune of £100!

Looking at the bigger picture however, we are providing a service for the Medway membership and beyond and maybe in the future we can encourage more members and indeed non-members to join us.

This morning I received five certificates from Lorna Beaumont, the South-East Region Pin Badge Box Co-ordinator verifying the boxes at the Red Dog PH, Fenn Bell PH, Coach and Horses PH and the Windmill PH plus the Cliffe Café had raised £550! So it's all swings and roundabouts as they say. It goes without saying the day was a great success, despite the disappointment, for some of not seeing the stone curlew as they chose to nest in a dip at the far end of their usual nesting area, not far from the Visitor Centre.

The weather was pretty good, although it did get a little chillier as the day trundled on and with even the odd very light shower.

Butterflies were about as expected on a reasonably sunny spring day, including comma, red admiral, painted lady, peacock, small tortoiseshell, brimstone, green-veined white, orange tip, small copper, holly blue, common blue, green hairstreak, small heath and speckled wood and we did manage between us to see most of them!
