Rushden Party in the Park 9th July 2011

Rushden Party in the Park 9th July 2011

For the 3rd year Ena and Alan Edwards booked a stall for the Rushden Party in The Park.
After a showery morning the weather was very kind to us with no rain in the afternoon.
It is always nice to see how many people feed the birds in their gardens and are glad to meet someone who can answer any questions that they have.
The badge maker again proved popular with up to 40 being made the children like to find their own picture and help make a badge Paul Inness certainly did a sterling job.
Many thanks to Paul and to Chris Andrews from Top Lodge for again lending things to help

Local member has Barn Owl sextuplets

Local member has Barn Owl sextuplets

This year is a good year in Northamptonshire for breeding barn owls. Vole numbers must be good because the average brood size this year is four, some years it is only two. Broods of five or six are not uncommon but this local member's brood of six is only the second in the county this year.
The owls in the picture are estimated to range from six weeks to eight weeks old. Owl eggs hatch every other day so there has to be almost two weeks difference in age.
On the day these owlets were ringed (7th July 2011) the youngest bird was the only one with a full stomach so it was good to see he was holding his own against his older siblings.
Many thanks to local ringer Paddy Jackson for ringing these birds and for his voluntary work monitoring the barn owls of Northamptonshire and surrounding areas.
