WINTER VISITORS

WINTER VISITORS

The winter before last saw a bumper influx of waxwings to our country and this year seems to be following suit. Our berries are in short supply due to berry bushes flowering in spring during a spell of very bad weather and large numbers of shrubs and trees producing no fruit or berries at all.
The situation in Scandinavia has been even worse and hence the large migration of birds from that country in search of food. As supermarkets and housing estates tend to plant berry bearing bushes and trees, such as cotoneaster and whitebeam, we are once again beginning to see reports of parties of waxwings of 50+ in our towns and villages.
