Mid Nene 2015 Photographic Competition - Closing date soon!

The theme for Mid-Nene Local Group Photography Competition 2015 is "British Wildlife". The theme is open to personal interpretation but the judges are looking for beautiful images of British wild mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, plants or fungi.
The twelve images selected by the judges will appear in the Mid-Nene Calendar for 2016 sold in aid of the RSPB Mid-Nene Local Group to raise funds for RSPB conservation projects.

Butterfly of the month

The purple emperor is one of Britain's rarest butterflies and is confined to deciduous woodlands in central southern England. When the sun is reflected at the right angle the males wing shows a magnificent purple sheen. This male has come down from the canopy to collect salts and minerals from the moist ground.

Picture of the month - stock doves

Believe it or not but our picture is of two young stock doves, four to five days old, in the new tawny owl nest box at Stanwick Lakes. This is their second nesting attempt. They were usurped from the nestbox by grey squirrels the first time, so lets hope they are lucky this time!
