RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch - Jesmond Dene

Nuthatch on branch

Saturday, 25 January 2020

Once again, the Newcastle RSPB local group held its own BGBW in Jesmond Dene in pleasant conditions (for January). We were greatly helped by Sarah Capes of Urban Green (Newcastle's Parks and Allotments), Mike Cook of the Friends of Jesmond Dene and Marian Foster who publicised the event on Radio Newcastle. Thank you also to members who came along to give help and support.
The two bird walks attracted a dozen people and families came to share views of birds at the feeders in the Nature Area. We hope that lots more families were persuaded to do their own BGBW as we gave out a hundred or so leaflets - and that you didn't forget to send in your return ! (Still time).
This is the bird list for the morning, not an account of numbers seen in one hour, as per the 'rules'.
River birds: mallard, moorhen, kingfisher, grey wagtail.
Woodland birds: sparrowhawk, wood pigeon, stock dove, carrion crow, magpie, jay, great spotted woodpecker, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, long-tailed tit, wren, nuthatch, tree creeper, blackbird, robin, song thrush, dunnock, chaffinch.
