Male chaffinch singing on branch

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch - 29th - 31st January 2021

Whilst the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic continues, why not seize the opportunity to take part in and enjoy Big Garden Birdwatch this year. Spend an hour counting the birds that you see in your garden either as a family or by yourself and then tell RSPB what you saw.

During the colder months, common garden birds such as blackbird, blue tit, great tit, robin, house sparrow, and chaffinch are on the look out for handouts. January is also a good time to look out for some of our winter visitors. Siskins, redwings, or brambling could visit your garden, and wintering blackcaps may visit suet feeders, so keep your eyes peeled.

First, choose any hour between 29th - 31st January 2021 to watch the activity. Count the birds that land in your garden, but ignore any birds that are in flight. To avoid double-counting, just record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time during your hour. Please do not keep a running total.

Once you have completed your Birdwatch, you can submit your results online at from 29th January to 19th February 2021.

If you would rather send your results by post, you can download a submission form direct from

Please post your results before 15th February 2021.

Finally - Every count is important, so if you only see a few birds or none at all, please do submit your result.
