Starling perched on wall

'Food for the Birds - Eat In or Take Away' - A Zoom Talk by Brian Nobbs - Saturday 9th October 2021

Birds have found a way to exploit virtually every food source and this talk examines how they do it. Geese graze grass, hummingbirds take nectar, finches and others eat seeds and fruits by day and the oilbird eats fruits by night. Invertebrates are taken from the air by swifts and flycatchers, and from the mud by waders equipped with a range of bill shapes.

Further up the food chain the vertebrates provide food for the larger birds. Fish are taken by herons, gannets, terns and auks; reptiles and mammals by raptors and owls; birds by hawks, harriers and falcons.

Finally there are the opportunists and refuse collectors, like gulls, kites and, of course, the vultures.
All these and more will be included, using photographs selected to illustrate their techniques, from the copper-rumped hummingbird to the Andean condor.

The meeting will be open from 7.15 pm ready for a 7.30 pm start. It is free to join for RSPB North East Hants Local Group Members. A donation of £3.00 is welcomed from Non Members.

If you are not already an RSPB Local Group Member and wish to register for this meeting, please email the local group at You will then be contacted before the event with both the meeting ID and Passcode.

We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an interesting talk.
