Coach trip: RSPB Minsmere Reserve, Suffolk

Location: RSPB Minsmere Reserve, Suffolk
Postcode: IP17 3BY (Google map)

RSPB Havering and NE London Local Groups have joined forces for coach trips. There is a 7.00am pick-up at Redbridge Tube Station, then 7.05 at Gants Hill, then 7.10 at Newbury Park. Mike Hughes, RSPB Havering group leader, is kindly taking bookings.

*** Sadly this is expected to be the last coach trip as Havering Local Group are unlikely to continue as their small committee do not have sufficient support. The coach trips have been running at a loss as not enough people join them to cover the increased cost of hiring the coach. ***

There's so much to see and hear at the RSPB's flagship nature reserve Minsmere: splendid woodland, wetland and coastal scenery, rare birds breeding and calling in on their migrations, shy wildlife like otters, the booming call of bitterns in spring, beautiful bugs and colourful wild flowers in summer.
As well as seven hides and a public viewing platform, there is a well equipped visitor centre, a café serving hot and cold food and drinks, toilets, disabled toilets, Picnic area and binocular hire. Minsmere has it all, a trip not to be missed!

Please book by 25 May 2019 (preferably earlier, to ensure coach trip runs).

For details about booking (including booking forms, payment, pick-up points etc.) please read / print the two-page document under 'Download file' on the 'Monthly Coach Trips' News Item dated 31st October 2018.

Time: 7am to 7pm

Price: Seats cost £20.00 each (please bring your RSPB membership card).

A Celebration with Miranda Krestovnikoff - 50 years of RSPB groups

Location: Woodford Memorial Hall (next to St Mary's Church) 209 High Road, South Woodford
Latitude/longitude: 51.598170,0.020347 (Google map)

Join Miranda Krestovnikoff, television wildlife presenter and RSPB President, at a special event celebrating 50 years of RSPB Local Groups.

50 years ago the RSPB started its first Local Group, known as the Epping Forest Group. After many years of talks, trips, films, fund raising and much enjoyment, the Epping Forest Group came to an end but interest was still present. So about 10 years ago our North East London RSPB Local Group was formed which covers much the same area and even includes some of the same people.

We will have displays of memorabilia from back then including recollections from Richard Oakman who was present at the outset in 1969. There will also be a special raffle and refreshments, including a 50th anniversary cake for Miranda to cut and us to share. Other RSPB staff, past and present, will also be there to mark the occasion.

Miranda's passion for conservation began while studying zoology at Bristol University. She has been well known as a radio and (since 1998) as a TV presenter, notably in the award-winning Coast series. She specialises in natural history programmes and you may know her as a resident wildlife expert on the BBC's The One Show. Miranda has fitted in all this while caring for her children and playing the flute in a local orchestra in Bristol!
She will cover two main topic areas: RSPB Conservation successes; her projects & TV work.

We would be delighted if you would join us for this celebration and help us raise money so the RSPB can continue to fight for nature.

You can buy a ticket via the Eventbrite website (plus booking fee) at

If you are coming to our next walk or talk you can buy a ticket from a committee member.

Evening Guided Walk: Claybury Woods / Park

Location: Claybury Woods, Redbridge
Latitude/longitude: 51.602223,0.055816 (Google map)

Come and join us for an evening walk in Claybury Woods with leader Richard Nelson.

For something a little different, we'll be starting early evening. As we stroll through the woodland we'll be trying to spot at least two species of our woodpecker as well as Nuthatch and Treecreeper. For the open areas of parkland we'll be on the lookout for birds of prey and also perhaps Stonechat and warblers perched up in the bushes. This will also be a good opportunity to test our birdsong knowledge as birds will often tune up for the final 'dusk' chorus towards the end of the day.

This walk will start at 6pm.

Please contact us to provide your details so we can tell you of any late changes (and to ensure we do not have too many people on the walk).
For all outings we advise strong waterproof footwear and warm waterproof clothing plus, of course, binoculars.

Time: 6pm

Price: £2.00 for RSPB & WREN members; £3.00 for non-members.
