Coach trip: RSPB Dungeness, Kent

Location: RSPB Dungeness Reserve
(nearest town is Lydd, Kent)
Postcode: TN29 9PN (Google map)

RSPB Havering and North East London Local Groups have joined forces for coach trips. There is a 7.00am pick-up at Redbridge Tube Station, then 7.05 at Gants Hill, then 7.10 at Newbury Park. Mike Hughes, RSPB Havering Group Leader, is the contact point for bookings and has kindly taken on the extra work for our members.

The reserve is set amidst mile after mile of shingle. From the visitor centre you can look out through a huge picture window at all the water-birds on the large gravel pit just outside, often a rare grebe or diver is among them. There are six hides on the main nature trail.

The position of Dungeness, jutting into the English Channel, makes it ideally placed to watch for migrant birds arriving or departing, with wheatears, swallows, martins and warblers regularly seen.
The visitor centre has a gift shop and sell hot and cold drinks and confectionary.
There is a separate toilet facility.

Please book before 19 January 2019 (preferably earlier, to ensure the coach trip runs)

Guided Walk: King George V Reservoir

Location: KGV Reservoir, Chingford
Postcode: E4 7PX (Google map)

Come and join us for a local walk at King George V Reservoir with Richard Nelson as our leader.

Richard has arranged for us to have access to this Chingford reservoir (the entrance is via a locked gate).
A tarmac path has been put down around the reservoir, so should be fine under foot.

These two large reservoirs belonging to Thames Water will hold exceptional numbers of wintering duck at this time of the year. We'll be carefully scanning through the vast numbers of Coot and Tufted Duck for hopefully a few more unusual visitors. This time last year we recorded a very handsome male Smew and also Scaup, Goldeneye and Goosander. Waders such as Green Sandpiper can be seen feeding around the edges and birds of prey like the Peregrine Falcon are frequently seen hunting within this area.

Public transport: The nearest railway stations are Ponders End, about 1.5km west of the reservoir entrance, and Chingford, about 2.5km to the east. Both are national rail stations with services from London Liverpool Street. Bus route 313 (Chingford to Potters Bar) runs along Lea Valley Road, starting at Chingford railway station and passing close to Ponders End station. Other bus routes that stop nearby are 215, 385 and 505.

Please contact us to provide your details so we can tell you of any late changes (and to make sure we do not have too many people on the walk).

For all outings we advise strong waterproof footwear and warm waterproof clothing plus, of course, binoculars.

Location: Meet Romford Road, Aveley, South Ockenden - Car parking charges apply for this half-day trip.

We want to promote links with other local nature groups who organise their own independent events. This walk is led by Mike Dent of Buteo Wildlife for the East London Birders Forum (ELBF).

"All three species of woodpeckers can be found here and this is the best time to see them. Winter Thrushes will still be present and can be found feeding up on the berry covered bushes ahead of their journey back to their breeding grounds. Nuthatch, Treecreeper and possible Firecrest are amongst other species which could be found. The lakes will hold commoner wildfowl."

Please contact the leader to book for each walk or trip at least 2 days in advance (contact details are needed in case of any late changes). If no-one has booked, the leader may not be at the meeting point.

Guided Walk: Fairlop Waters

Location: Fairlop Waters
Forest Road, Barkingside, Essex
Postcode: IG6 3HN (Google map)

Come and join us for a local walk at Fairlop Waters.

Neil Twyford who regularly 'patchworks' this area will be leading us around for this walk. It includes a mixture of large lakes, streams, woodland, open heathland as well as surrounding farmland. Different species of water birds can be seen here such as the handsome Great Crested and Little Grebes. It will be worth checking the edges of the lakes for Lapwing and fishing Little Egret and Grey Heron. Away from the watery areas we'll hopefully be catching up with perhaps a Little Owl, other birds may include Reed Bunting, Meadow Pipit and also Grey Wagtails as they chase small insects within the streams.

Please contact us to provide your details so we can tell you of any late changes (and to make sure we do not have too many people on the walk).
