Looking for the Goshawk

Location: Gwinnell Room, St Mary's Church, 207 High Road, South Woodford

In the UK, it is easier to find a stuffed goshawk in a museum than to get to see one in the flesh and feathers. Conor Jameson has travelled to many places to do better, and written a book about it.

Guided Walk: RSPB Rainham Marshes - by ELBF

Location: Meet 09.30 in the reserve car park off New Tank Hill Road, Purfleet.
Half or full day
Postcode: RM19 1SZ (Google map)

We want to promote links with other local nature groups who organise their own independent events. This walk is led by Mike Dent of Buteo Wildlife for the East London Birders Forum (ELBF).

"A chance to thoroughly investigate this flagship reserve within sight of the centre of London. We may need to spend time scouring the various pools for waders or searching the bushes for migrant passerines or even watching the river for seabirds which have been blown unusually far up the Thames."

Please contact the leader to book for each walk or trip at least 2 days in advance (contact details are needed in case of any late changes, and if no-one has booked the leader may not be at the meeting point).
If you require further information about these walks, please contact Dave at david.hutley@ntlworld.com or Mike at mike.elbf@gmail.com

Time: 9.30 am

Price: Usually £2 per head towards ELBF Public Liability Insurance (plus entry fee for non-RSPB members)

Booking essential

Guided Walk: Hainault Forest Country Park

Location: Hainault Forest Country Park, Chigwell
Latitude/longitude: 51.617806,0.130896 (Google map)

Come and join us for a local walk in this large park with woodlands (one of Redbridge's Green Flag Award open spaces) - with Richard Nelson as our leader.

With a mixture of open grassland, woodland and a small lake, this large parkland offers a varied habitat. We expect to see raptors such as sparrowhawks and buzzards here as they skirt the edge of the woodland. We will be checking the lake for a variety of waterfowl and on the open ground, we'll be on the look out for green woodpeckers feeding and stonechats perched up on-top of the gorse. Meadow pipits are normally seen, as well as skylarks feeding within the grassy tussocks. Within the wooded areas, we'll be trying to spot mixed flocks of tits and hopefully the tiny Goldcrest too!

Please contact us to provide your details so we can tell you of any late changes (and to make sure we do not have too many people on the walk).
For all outings we advise strong waterproof footwear and warm waterproof clothing plus, of course, binoculars.
