Goa - Kites, Kingfishers and Koels

Goa - Kites, Kingfishers and Koels

Chris Ward came to tell us about this picturesque part of India. Well known as a holiday destination, it's not just a good place to get a suntan, it's a birdwatcher's paradise with many habitats - wide river estuaries, mangrove swamps, marshes, scrub-covered hillsides, arid fields, and rich forest reserves at the foot of the majestic Western Ghats.

Goa is also home to many species of endemic birds having one National Park and six wildlife sanctuaries - 382 species of birds have been recorded in the Goan area.

Chris is a keen photographer and traveller, giving many talks to clubs and societies. He is the Group Leader of the North Bucks RSPB Local Group, encouraging children to get involved with his work with the RSPB Wildlife Explorers Group in Milton Keynes. He has an eye for a rare bird as he used to be a member of the Buckinghamshire Birds Rarities Committee.

Chris Ward entertained us with some excellent photos. The link below will take you to his website where you can see the quality of some of his photos.
It was very interesting to see that many of the photos were taken within a twenty minute walk of the hotel where he and his wife stayed. Although the trip to the Western Ghats required a longer trip (with a guide and a stay overnight), Chris showed us that it is possible to stay at a standard tourist hotel by the sea and see a great variety of birds by simply taking a local walk.

If you click on the 'Download file' link, then you will see the poster that David (our Publicity officer) produced to advertise this talk.
We distribute the poster to libraries, supermarkets (many have Community Notice boards) and have managed to get it displayed on some of Redbridge's Community Notice boards (e.g. in Wanstead High Street).

If you have any suggestions of other places to advertise that may encourage more people to come to our talks, we would be glad to hear them.
