Newsletter No.7 - keeping in touch

Newsletter No.7 - keeping in touch

This is our seventh newsletter since the suspension of our regular meetings and walks programme.

If you click on the 'Download file' link (scroll down to the last line of this News item), then you will see our 2-page newsletter.

Here are some of the contents from the first page:

"Dear All,

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone. Hope you are all well.

With the Christmas season almost upon us I thought we would take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and Merry Christmas even if, for many of us, it is not the Christmas that we envisaged.

Our next three meetings are all on zoom.
12th January AGM followed by Roy Atkins from Speyside Wildlife talking about Speyside Wildlife
9th February Andre Farrar - My Life with Birds
9th March Simon Ginnaw - Birding in the Heart of Europe (Hungary)

We will review the situation in January regarding the meetings for April onwards, whether we will continue with zoom meetings or it will be safe to return to the hall

We have a full programme of walks for next year. We did a practice run for committee members in early December, to see how a bird walk would work with social distancing. With the move to tier 4 for London, and a possible long-term lockdown after Christmas we are monitoring the situation closely.

As it's Christmas, I could not resist including a picture of a robin.

Warm regards,
Your Friends on the Committee"

The newsletter also contains info about the Redbridge Green Urban Landscape Policy with a survey link (closing date 15th Jan 2021), the new Wildlife Discovery Centre at Fishers Green, the Big Garden Bird Watch, Essex Wildlife Trust's 2020 photographic competition (voting closes 11th Jan 2021) and a quiz.

Online event on 'Our Future Fairlop' at 6pm

Online event on 'Our Future Fairlop' at 6pm

If you click on the link at the bottom of this page
(or go to ),
you can register for a free ticket for this online event.

There have been various consultations about the future of this site.

Some details from Redbridge Council:
"We have exciting plans to preserve and expand Fairlop Waters by adding 250 acres to the park in the coming years. Working with the community, we want to create an inspiring vision for Fairlop Waters.

Throughout 2020, our parks and green spaces have become even more valuable for our health and wellbeing, providing us with essential spaces to relax, explore, and discover. The Council are working with the community engagement social enterprise 'Street Space' to engage with residents, businesses and organisations. We want to find out what extra leisure, cultural and environmental facilities local people would like to see in Fairlop Waters."

There is a second online survey available for you to share your thoughts.

Zoom Social evening / Quiz

Zoom Social evening / Quiz

Relax from Christmas preparations!

We can't offer you our usual delicious, home made treats such as mince pies and other goodies or give you a free raffle ticket.
Nor can we tempt you to buy Christmas gifts from our Sales table (but don't forget the RSPB Online shop).

However, we can still have a get together with a quiz or two, chat online to people we have not been able to meet up with for most of the year and you can bring your own festive nibbles with your drink of choice!

The format for the meeting is to open the Zoom meeting at 7.30pm allowing time for members to join the meeting and 'chat' before formally starting at 8pm.

If you are already on our email list, you will receive an email from us with a Zoom link to our talk and further details.

If we do not have details for you, please email us at

We have guides for attending Zoom meetings using a PC/laptop or using a phone/tablet which we will provide if you email us.

The meeting is limited to 100 people because of Zoom licensing rules.
We look forward to seeing you on the evening.
