Coach trip to Mere Sands Wood

Location: Join the coach on Mount Street in the centre of Nottingham
Postcode: NG1 6HG (Google map)

It has been a while since our last visit to this 42 hectare reserve nestled amongst the peaceful agricultural landscape of Rufford, Lancashire. It boasts a total of 170 bird species, over 60 of which breed. Autumn and winter is a great time to see the waterfowl that make this reserve their home and there is a very good chance of finding a bittern and a water rail. It's not just birds as Mere Sands Wood holds a small population of red squirrels as well as roe deer and other mammals.

Old Moor has a wide range of habitats including reed beds, lakes, wader scrapes, ponds, hedgerow, meadows and wet grassland. There is always something to see. Special birds here are tree sparrows, willow tit, kingfisher, bittern and lots of wigeon. The reserve is also home to three pairs of barn owls and hopefully on our visit there will be a murmuration of starlings. Added to these there is a chance of peregrine and other birds of prey looking for a meal.

Coach trip to Holkham

Location: Join the coach on Mount Street in the centre of Nottingham
Postcode: NG1 6HG (Google map)

Gone are the days of the Holkham to Wells walks. We have been told that there is now a visitor's centre at Holkham along with much needed toilets so this trip will be to Holkham only. This will give us much longer to hunt for the shore larks, twite and snow buntings that make the beach their winter home. We will also have longer to spot what's on the sea, look through the goose flocks and visit the hides while saving shoe leather.

(If you need to use a cheque, make it out to "Nottingham RSPB Local Group" and post to 22 Wray Close, Nottingham NG3 2FS.)
