Understanding the World of Birds by Peter Holden

Location: The Wilberforce Centre, St Paul's Church, The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, London, NW7 1QU (Bus 240)
Postcode: NW7 1QU (Google map)

We look forward to welcoming RSPB legend, author and TV presenter Peter Holden to present "Understanding the World of Birds ". This timely illustrated presentation, just before Big Garden Bird Watch weekend, will delve into the intimate lives of many of the birds that share our gardens and countryside. His talks are always highly entertaining as well as informative and appeal to a wide audience whether birder or not.

In advance of his visit, Peter said:
The more I have studied birds the more I have come to realise most bird books miss out the most interesting things. They tell you what something looks like and they try describe what it sounds like and where it might live, but most never tell you about their interesting lives: how long they live for, do they keep the same mate, do they sometimes have more than one mate, how do some male birds make a noise to attract a female without using their voice...and so on.

Peter has also posed some teasers for members of the audience:
How can a bird make a noise with its feathers
Why do the all eggs in a Blue Tits nest hatch at the same time when they were laid over several days
Which British bird builds a nest that floats on water and why?

Find out the answers to these questions and much more at our first indoor meeting of 2019. Everyone is very welcome.

Dr Michael Worms will enlighten us about the strategy employed by different animals to survive disease.

This is an aspect of nature that we tend to ignore unless Bird Flu or other diseases affecting pets or farm animals hits the headlines.

Some diseases can mutate and cross infect other species including household pets and even human animals. Forewarned is forearmed!

Blackcap & Garden Warbler songs are often confused but can they be separated on call?
