Thorpe Park

Location: Thorpe Park, GR TQ 026688. Less than 1 mile.
Meet in the farmyard in Coldharbour Lane, Thorpe which is just east of the junction with Ten Acre Lane and the width restriction. Look for the open barn with large gates adjacent on south side of the road. Normal footwear will be fine as all surfaces are paved or firm gravel. Loos available.

A return to this productive site for winter wildfowl at the peak of the winter influx.

Meet in the reserve car park off the Lower Sandhurst Road. No facilities but pubs nearby in Sandhurst. Car share if possible.

This restored gravel extraction site near Sandhurst has several lakes and resident barn owls. Goosanders should also be present.

Blashford Lakes

Location: Blashford Lakes, Hampshire.
Ellingham Drove, Ringwood. 79 miles via M3 and A31 to Ringwood - turn right on A338 towards Salisbury reserve is on right after 1.7 miles and use car park on left. Meet at the Tern Hide by the car park. Facilities in the Education Centre.

We had a very rewarding visit last November to this area of flooded former gravel pits and woodland. We should expect to see a wide variety of overwintering wildfowl as well as many woodland birds. On a cold winter's day sustenance can be found at the nearby Alice Lisle pub which overlooks one of the lakes.

This RSPB reserve with car park and cafe on the north side of the Thames is very close to Central London. Developed from a military firing range only since 2000 it contains reed beds and marshlands with a wide variety of waterfowl.

Farlington Marshes

Meet at reserve end of car park adjacent to the A27. No facilities, so you may wish to stop at the Queen Elizabeth country park en route.

This is our easiest to reach coastal site and offers something different from our usual inland walks. We will be looking for winter visitors such as geese, waders and, with luck, short-eared owls.

There is a good chance of seeing hobby here if the weather is good, as well as woodlark, common redstart and woodpeckers. Dragonflies, damselflies and basking common lizards should also be seen.

Meet at the LARGE car park nearest to the lake at GR: SU 858418. No facilities but loos available at the Frensham Great Pond Visitor Centre. Possible parking charge, although only at weekends currently.

This pond is quieter than its big neighbour. The usual heathland species should be at their peak and we will be watching the skies for raptors and the reed beds for warblers.
