Looking out for migrating birds

Something to do while waiting for our spring migrants to arrive...

As a tail-piece to his very interesting talk 'Birding Israel' on 1 February, Mike Alibone told us of the project, Champions of the Flyway. This bird race is staged as part of the Eilat Bird Festival by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and is a BirdLife International Migratory Birds & Flyways Programme initiative. This year, the race will take place on 26 March and birding teams from all over the world are staging their strategy so that they may win one of three coveted titles:

Champions of the Flyway: awarded to the team that records the most species in 24 hours.

Guardians of the Flyway: awarded to the team that generates the most funding for this year's conservation action project: stopping the illegal killing of birds in Croatia and Serbia.

Knights of the Flyway: awarded to the team which does the most to promote the cause and helps others to see the most birds and get the most enjoyment out of the event.

By coincidence, our speaker next month, Mark Pearson, is leading one of the teams: the Zeiss Yorkshire Terriers. If you would like Mark's team to be in the running for the Guardians of the Flyway award, you can donate via the link below:
