Bird Numbers on the Decline

Members of the public may be surprised at the number of birds that are decreasing in numbers and even facing extinction. This is happening throughout the world and one of the main reasons is the amount of cruel, unnecessary and often illegal hunting and killing of birds on their migrating routes, especially over Malta and Cyprus.

Birds such as turtle dove, house sparrow, corn bunting and starlings are among the smaller species while the larger birds of prey such as harriers, eagles, goshawks are even persecuted in the UK.

There are many more species and more information can be obtained on the main RSPB's website at: http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/decline/nationaltrends.aspx

This decline is being fought by the RSPB and its members, and the more support from the public by joining, the more success can be achieved.
