Midweek Walk - Wentworth

Tree sparrow on twig

Wednesday, 23 March 2016

The weather was still but overcast as we set off on our Wentworth walk, passing the active rookery with signs of nest building and repair going on. As we left the village, the first star sighting of the day was a Little Owl. Further on, Lapwings were gathering in the fields to nest.

The most vivid site of the morning was a field full of a huge mixed flock of Fieldfare, Redwing and Starling - presumably getting ready to migrate. In the one field with them was a veritable safari of other birds - twelve species in all including Tree Sparrow. There were further views of the Little Owl as we walked back up the lane into the village.

After lunch, a few members went on a tour of the historic gardens offered to us free of charge by Wentworth Garden Centre. As well seeing as the gardens, this small group also managed to add Nuthatch to our bird sightings for the day.
