Midweek Walk - Shire Brook Valley

Male blackcap in hawthorn bush

Wednesday, 11 May 2016

We left the car park under grey threatening skies, expecting rain. However this didn't dampen our spirits and we were soon enthralled by a Whitethroat in full song. As conditions improved, we were surrounded by singing Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Robin, Blackbird, Great Tit and Wren, but it was the rich, fluty song of the Song Thrush that serenaded us all morning.

Once out of the woodland, we had Skylark, Meadow Pipit, House Martin and Swift and observed a pair of Crows mobbing an agitated Buzzard.

We finished the walk on a high, with great views of a singing Blackcap. We all agreed it had been a terrific walk, though it was certainly getting increasingly difficult to get good views of the birds as the leaves were emerging at such rapid rate.
