Midweek Walk - Shatton

Nuthatch on branch

Wednesday, 7 September 2016

We set out on a lovely warm sunny morning and, after crossing the busy Hope Valley road, we were on our way to Thornhill. Because of the thick leaf cover, we struggled to see birds and only managed brief glimpses of Robins, Wrens and Blackbirds.

As we walked the leafy lanes beyond Thornhill, we observed a flock of Swallows feeding up before their epic journey back to Africa. Out of nowhere, four Common Buzzards and a Sparrowhawk appeared and circled overhead which certainly put a spring in our step.

After several stiles and a railway bridge, we reached the picturesque water mill at Brough and headed on to Shatton. The footpath proved quite tricky and we were glad to cross the ford back into Shatton whilst adding Nuthatch and Meadow Pipit to our lists.
