Midweek Walk - Porter Valley

Female great tit

Wednesday, 7 December 2016

We set off from Forge Dam on a lovely sunny mild winter morning. Redwings were high in the tree tops and we had brief views of Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard. By the waterside we were entertained by Mallards, a Moorhen and a Grey Wagtail. At Wire Mill Dam, we had great views of a stunning Mandarin drake and we noticed a Black-headed Gull emerging into early breeding plumage.

We continued down the valley and added Nuthatch, Fieldfare, Goldfinch and Great Spotted Woodpecker to our lists. At Hangingwater Road bridge, we had good views of two Dippers and, after crossing to Shepherd's Wheel, it just got better. First we played hide and seek with a Treecreeper and then we all watched an amazing Kingfisher catching small fish - completely unperturbed by our presence.

What a magical end to an enjoyable walk down the Porter Valley.
