Midweek Walk - Gleadless Valley

Dunnock on grass

Wednesday, 8 March 2017

This walk in the Gleadless Valley was a new one for us, but it turned out to be a very interesting urban walk.

We set off from the bottom of Blackstock Road and walked up the wooded valley.  The amount of litter and debris dumped in the valley was quite shocking but the birds didn't seem to mind - with Robins, Wrens and Dunnocks in full song in the early spring sunshine.

We did a huge circuit of the valley and encountered very slippy, muddy conditions, but were rewarded with sightings of Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, Goldcrest, Goldfinch and Nuthatch. Just before the end of our walk, we encountered an elusive Great Spotted Woodpecker which played hide and seek with us, but most of us got reasonable views.
