Midweek Walk - Barlow Brook

Goldfinch on seed feeder

Wednesday, 8 November 2017

We were very fortunate to have chosen such a lovely sunny morning for our bird walk near Chesterfield, and the autumn colours were stunning.

After walking through woodland where we saw Blackbirds, Blue Tits and a Goldcrest, we emerged into farmland with lots of horses in fields. A Red-legged Partridge appeared on a wall and we then went on to see Redwing, Pied Wagtail, Chaffinch and Mistle Thrush.

A small hamlet by the brook appeared to be full of birds and we ticked off Nuthatch, Kestrel and Great Spotted Woodpecker. But that wasn't all as, high in some birch trees, a flock of Lesser Redpolls were feeding alongside Goldfinches.

On our way back, three Buzzards were spotted circling lazily and these in turn were being mobbed by a few corvids, mainly Carrion Crows but with one identified as a Raven.

Yet another grand walk. Thanks to Paul for leading it.
